Lawrence Donald Sirk



CLARKSBURG — Lawrence Donald Sirk of Clarksburg, West Virginia, died July 9, 2009, at Ruby Memorial Hospital. Mr. Sirk was born on February 12, 1924, the son of Vessie Allen Sirk and Virgie Alice Hinkle.


In 1947, he married Joan Ruth Crickard Sirk, who preceded him in death in 1995. He was father to five children — Donna Sirk Carpenter of Winchester, Virginia, Stephen Allen Sirk of Toledo, Ohio, Sherry Ann Sirk, deceased, David Richard Sirk of Mason, Ohio, and Christie Lynn Mentzer of New Boston, Michigan.


He was grandfather to Tracy Knight and Michael Carpenter of Winchester, Virginia, Kathleen Griebel of Fairmont, WV, Matthew Sirk, Laura Sirk, Allison Sirk and Kristina Crowley of Mason, Ohio, and Adam Mentzer, Joanna Mentzer and Melissa Mentzer of New Boston, Michigan. He had 3 great- grandchildren — Caden and Collin Knight and Thomas Crowley.


He proudly served in the U.S. Army, Third Armor Division, during World War II, where he saw battle at Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. As a result of his heroism, he received two Purple Hearts. Mr. Sirk was a general mine foreman for many years. He worked for West Virginia Corrections during his later years. He attended church at both Stealey United Methodist and North View United Methodist. He was a member of the Clarksburg Lions Club, the Masonic Temple in Clarksburg, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He loved his family, camping and traveling.


Mr. Sirk is at Davis-Weaver Funeral Home in Clarksburg. The family will receive visitors on Monday, July 13, from 6-9 p.m. The funeral is at Davis-Weaver on Tuesday, July 14 at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at the Maple Wood Cemetery in Elkins.
