A triple homicide in Shingletown Tuesday night ranks as one of the stunning murder cases in Shasta County history.
But the tragic death toll was not the county's highest.
It was on April 10, 2007, when five members of a Happy Valley family, including a 13-year-old girl, were found dead inside their burned three-bedroom Le Conge Drive home.
A sixth family member also died, but it's believed he's the one who shot and killed his father, three siblings and niece, as well as the family dog, before setting the home ablaze.
It was the largest mass murder in Shasta County history.
No arrests were made in the Happy Valley murders, but investigators have said DNA and other evidence proved that 34-year-old Russell Wilcox ? the only one of the family to die from the fire and not gunshot wounds ? was the killer.
Those who died in the horrific attack from .22-caliber and shotgun wounds were his father, Richard Wilcox, 66; brother Brett Wilcox, 38; sisters Cindy Wilcox, 35, and Susan Wilcox, 31; and niece Lisa Wilcox, 13.
Russell Wilcox, who was described as mentally unstable, was the only person in the home who didn't die from gunshot wounds. Instead, an autopsy established that he died from severe burns and smoke inhalation.
