Stiles Services
Services will be held at 2 o'clock this afternoon in the St. James Methodist church at Enterprise for Mrs
Lora May Stile, 72, wife of John Stiles of Shinnston. The Rev Homer burge will officiate and buraial will be made in the IOOF cemetery at Enterprise by the Tetrick Funeral home of Shinnston.
Lora's mother died when she was only 18 months old. Don't know when her father gave her
to the John B. Shreve and Mary (Martha) J. Shreve family. It is believed about the time she was three years old.
The Shreve's daughter Anna died of fever in November 1882. Lora always said that the Shreve family only had boys and a girl was needed to help the mother around the house. I don't believe that was the reason Mary took her into her home. She was probably grieving the death of her daughter and took Lora since she had lost her mother and her father could not take care of her. The families were friends and were oriinally from Upshur County where Lora was living with her father. Lora had an older half brogher Luther David and he went to live with his mother's step mother.
Lora grew up with the Shreve family in Harrison County. She felt that she was no more than an unpaid maid, even though, John Shreve may have felt that way but his wife did not. Lora was her little girl and Lora always spoke very well of her. She didn't seem to have liked John or any of the male members of the family.
She attended school in Harrison County on Piggotts Run in the lower years and the upper years at Long Run school where she met her future husband, John N. Stiles from Bingamon Creek.
Maggie married Leo Harrison Davis on Aug 16, 1919. Soon after she found out that he was married and had not gotten a divorce. John N. Stiles, her father, paid $100.00 to have the marriage annuled. Later
Leo divorced his first wife. After Leo divorced his first wife he and Maggie remarried Feb 15, 1925
