Ray Reeves Boyce
For the Times West Virginian Thu Mar 24, 2011, 05:00 AM EDT
FAIRMONT — Ray Reeves Boyce passed away peacefully at home on Dec. 21, 2010, at age 86.
He was born on July 28, 1924, in Fairmont, the son of the late Clara Stiles Boyce and stepson of Cecil Boyce.
He graduated from East Fairmont High School and West Virginia University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science and master’s degree in physics.
He was a U.S. Army veteran and fought in World War II, where he was a POW and wounded in duty. His lifetime work included the occupations of a nuclear physicist and rocket scientist. At one point in his career, he worked with Adm. Hyman Rickover, father of the nuclear submarine.
Ray was a lifetime member of United Methodist Church, which is where he met Colleen Josephine Gotses. He married the late Colleen Gotses Boyce of Fairmont on April 3, 1947, in her parents’ home. They had a happy married life for 54 years until her passing in 2001.
Throughout his life, he was active in the church and served as choir member, Sunday School teacher and Bible study teacher. Ray was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, St. Lucie River Chapter in Florida, and served as president and treasurer. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 318 in Florida and served as commander. He enjoyed singing and was also a member of the Marion County Songbirds.
Ray is survived by his two daughters, Reverend Jennifer Ham of Roswell, Ga., and Rebecca Buchanan of Fort Pierce, Fla. Other Florida family survivors are a son-in-law, John Buchanan; two grandsons, Robert Grossman and Joseph Spencer; two granddaughters, Alison Grossman and Collette Brandon; son-in-law, Josh Brandon; great-granddaughter, Isabella Grossman; second wife, Gail Harper Boyce; stepdaughter, Shannon Cummings; and stepson, John David Eisenbarger of New Jersey.
Fairmont family survivors are brother-in-law, Dr. Paul Gotses and his wife Margi Gotses; sister-in-law, Mrs. Julia Gotses; three nephews, John Paul Gotses, Richard Gotses and Stephen Rutherford; and one niece, Mary Leann Beveridge.
Other family members from Fairmont are the late Helen Rutherford, sister-in-law; the late Mitchell Rutherford, brother-in-law; and two nephews, the late Leonard Rutherford and David Rutherford.
Ray was a quiet and loving man who adored his family, especially his grandchildren. He will also be remembered as being a godly man, proud American, genius in the areas of physics and math, compassionate, kind and generous. He was always willing to help someone in need. His deep faith in God inspired people from all walks of life.
A military graveside service to celebrate the life of Ray and Colleen Boyce will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery at 4 p.m. Saturday. The Rev. Jennifer Ham will officiate the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to Gateway United Methodist Church in Fairmont.
