Howard L. Creighton, Jr., who died July 17, 2001, were well-known in the
Clarksburg area as owners, since the 1950's, of The Creighton Music Company.
She was born in Corona, on Long Island, NY, Feb. 2, 1911 a daughter of the late
Emil F. L. Jacobi & Laura Young Jacobi. She married Howard in 1931 and
moved to Clarksburg around 1938 for Howard to began working in the Company
started by his father, Howard L. Creighton, Sr.
Gertrude was one of six children: surviving are two sisters, Elsie Krill and
Ruth Lephardt, both of Baltimore, MD and a brother, Emil Jacobi, in Denver, CO.
She & Howard had three daughters and sons-in-law: Mrs. Marilyn O’Kelly &
husband, Michael, of Clarksburg, WV, Mrs. Sandra Tetrick, & husband, William
Guy “Bud”, of John’s Island, SC and Mrs. Barbara Frasher & husband, Nicholas,
of Summersville, SC. Their only son, Howard L. Creighton III, died Nov. 6, 1951.
Gertrude is also survived by seven grandchildren: Karen O’Kelly, Kirsten DeVono,
Sean O’Kelly, Willis Guy Tetrick, Kevin Creighton Tetrick, Douglas DePolo and
Laura Patton, four great grandchildren, Michael & Lauren Harris, Joseph Michael
DeVono and Madeline Patton and several nieces and nephews.
Gertrude was also preceded in death by two brothers, Karl & Rudolph Jacobi.
Until she moved to South Carolina, following Howard’s death, they were members
of the First Presbyterian Church in Clarksburg, and lived for many years on
Baver Street. She was also one of the original founders of the Stealey Terrace
Garden Club and won may awards for her floral-decorative displays. Gertrude
was an accomplished seamstress as all her daughters will testify. When they were
all grown-up enough, she joined Howard in the day-to-day operation of Creighton
Music Co. until they sold the business in the 1970's.
There will be a Memorial Graveside Service, next to Howard, at the Bridgeport
Cemetery on Thursday, July 10, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. for just family & friends,
with the Rev. Michael D. O’Kelly, Marilyn’s husband, a Unitarian Universalist
Minister, presiding. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Stealey
Terrace Garden Club %Velma Reeves, Treasurer, 1222 Briercliff Road, Bridgeport,
