Individual Note: John Heels was tried at Middlesex Gaol on 4th Feb. 1802 for horse stealing and sentenced to death, later commuted to transportation for life. He was 5'5" tall and had a dark complexion. he was sent to the hulk "Captivity" at Portsmouth on 16th October 1802 and was transported to Australia on the HMS 'Calcutta' a royal navy vessel sent to colonize Port Phillip Bay to protect Bass Strait from the French
