Joseph Thomas was a native of southeastern Pennsylvania. He was among the first dettlers in the vicinity of the Forks of Flat run in Mannington district where he took up a tract of four or five hundred acress of land and where he followed farming on a large scale the remainder of his life. He was a soldier in the War of 1812 and a member of the Baptist Church. he married Miss Nancy Riggs a Pennsylvania lady and they became the parents of the following children: George, Joseph, John, Isaac, Irael, Nancy Massa, Cynthia and Mary.
Noted in margin of Death Records of Marion County reported by son; Isreal
Date listed in death record is May 13, 1869 but family records list death as

He was an extensive farmer all his life, owning a farm of five hundred acres. Politically he was a democrat and religiously a member of the Baptist Church. He married Orpha, a daughter of Jack Brookover, of New Martinville, VA and six sons and one daughter were born to their union. James A. a farmer of mannington district and deputy sheriff of this county. George R., Doctor William N. Rufus B, a farmer, Emerson L. a farmer; also a farmer and Rebecca, wife of GB Tetrick a farmer of Lincoln District.
