Louise Anna Kundel was born February 6, 1923 on a farm near Ayrshire, Iowa to Alfred Lyon and Annalena (Petersen) Lyon. She had one younger sister, Fern (Lyon) Orr. Louise was a 1941 graduate of Ayrshire High School and a 1943 graduate of Fort Dodge Beauty Academy. She loved horses in her youth and had many father/daughter stories of their riding horses and working horse teams.
Following the untimely death of Louise’s father and her future husband’s (Jack Kundel’s) father in 1944, Jack was mustered out of the Army Air Corps and he and Louise were married on August 13, 1944, and assumed responsibility for the two family farms. Louise and Jack were married for 46 years when Jack unexpectedly died in 1986. Louise and Jack had two sons: John, born in 1946 and Karl, born in 1948.
Louise was very proud of being from Ayrshire and of being an Iowan. She was not shy about telling anyone that “Iowa fed the world” and was absolutely disdainful of people who did not know where Iowa was. Louise loved to talk so it was natural for her to participate in various community theater productions and “ham it up”. She loved the Methodist Church and Circle with all of the family and friends who attended and socialized after service.
Learning and education were priorities for Louise’s family whether it was life lessons learned on the farm, from the community or from attending college. After retiring from farming, Louise and Jack bought the town grocery store which they enjoyed tremendously (even though Louise occasionally thought Jack spent too much time in the café). Louise also spent countless hours fishing with Jack in rain or snow, in the boat or in the ice house.
Even though suffering through multiple health issues after Jack died, Gramma Louise, aka “G.L.”, had a resilience and toughness which kept her fighting back without a complaint. After suffering a stroke in 2000, Louise moved to be close to John and his wife (Devon), first in Kearney, Nebraska and since 2004 in the St. Louis area. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren kept her spirits high and filled her soul with joy. Louise recently suffered another stroke and on Thursday, December 20, 2012, went to be with “her handsome husband”, Jack.
Louise is survived by: her oldest son, John and his wife, Devon (Williams) Kundel of Florissant, MO, grandson J.Tyler Kundel and his wife, Kathleen (Mckinnon) Kundel, great granddaughters, Madeline, Leah, Natalie, and Ilise of Greenwood, IN; grandson Travis Kundel and his wife JoAnn (Humphrey) Kundel, great grandsons Ryan and Evan of Florissant, MO; grandson Mitchell Kundel and his wife Diana (Daly) Kundel, great grandsons Bryce and Owen of Glendale, MO; Her youngest son, Karl and his wife, Susan (Phillips) Kundel of Collegeville, PA, granddaughter Allison Kundel of Coralville, IA. Louise was preceded in death by her parents, sister and husband.
